The ‘Parco
Neapolis’ archaeological area which includes the Greek
Theatre and the ‘Dionysius’ Ear’ (open every day) is 800
metres from the hotel and easily reached on foot.
The unique ‘Paolo Orsi’ archaeological
museum (near the Parco Neapolis) with its rich
collection of exhibits is 1 km from the hotel (closed
Monday morning).
The Island of Ortygia (original
centre of Syracuse) is about 2 km from the hotel and
reached by crossing the beautiful ‘Ponte Umbertino’.
Sights on Ortygia include the cathedral with its baroque
façade, built on the remains of an ancient Doric temple
whose columns are still visible both inside and out.
There is also an array of palaces and fountains dating
from the fourteenth to eighteenth centuries, the
‘Bellomo’ art gallery and the ‘Fonte Aretusa’ with its
papyrus reeds.
Syracusa’s beaches are to the
south of the city (about 8 km away) and may be reached
by public transport, with stops right outside the
hotel.
Particular note must be made of the
religious festival between 13 and 21 December each year
celebrating Santa Lucia, the city’s patron saint. This
features special ‘folk’ events and an interesting
‘twinning’ with the pagan ‘Festival of Lights’ in Sweden
with events running parallel to the religious and folk
festival. | | | |
